Judge finds Dean Gushwa guilty of official misconduct
Umatilla County District Attorney Dean Gushwa was found guilty today of official misconduct and resigned.
Gushwa waived his right to a jury and was found guilty by Circuit Judge Gregory Baxter after a stipulated facts trial. Baxter sentenced Gushwa to 3 years probation, during which time he cannot hold public office.
Gushwa had agreed to resign regardless of the outcome of the trial as part of a pre-trial agreement.
Last August, the Oregon Department of Justice opened a criminal investigation into alleged criminal conduct by Gushwa based on a referral by the Pendleton Police Department.
Senior Assistant Attorneys General Erin Greenawald and Jennifer Gardiner prosecuted the case for the Department of Justice. Special Agent Kim Hyde was the lead investigator.
Attorney General John Kroger leads the Oregon Department of Justice. The Department’s mission is to fight crime and fraud, protect the environment, improve child welfare, promote a positive business climate, and defend the rights of all Oregonians.
