The National Advisory Committee on the Sex Trafficking of Children and Youth in the United States was established in 2017 pursuant to Section 121 of the Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act of 2014 (P.L. 113-183). The Committee advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Attorney General on practical and general policies to improve the Nation’s response to the sex trafficking of children and youth in the United States.

In September 2020, the Committee published its interim report, Best Practices and Recommendations for States, which highlights 12 core areas with 127 recommendations for states to address the sex trafficking of children and youth. In the report, the Committee recommended that each state collaborate with human trafficking task forces, child welfare agencies, law enforcement, prosecutors, courts, other government agencies, non-government organizations, and other relevant groups to evaluate their state’s efforts to implement the recommendations and highlight innovative and successful work.

The Committee will be evaluating state implementation of recommendations through a State Self-Assessment Survey available online. NHTTAC is hosting 12 topical technical assistance consultation calls with the Committee for states and relevant stakeholders to learn more about the recommendations and completing the State Self-Assessment Survey.
