FEDERAL STIMULUS MONEY FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT: $4 BILLION

  • Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance grants: $2 billion. For states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and to improve the criminal justice system, focusing on seven main areas: Law enforcement programs, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, corrections and community corrections programs, drug treatment and enforcement programs, planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs, and crime victim and witness programs.
  • Byrne discretionary grants: $225 million. National, regional, state local or private entities are eligible. Money goes to preventing crime and drug abuse, enhancing law enforcement, courts, corrections and offender re-entry.
  • Hiring police officers and sheriffs deputies: $1 billion.
  • High-Intensity Drug Trafficking: $30 million.
  • Crime Victims: $325 in Violence Against Women Act grants and crime victim compensation and services.
  • Rural Law Enforcement grants: $125 million.
  • Tribal Law Enforcement Assistance: $225 million.
  • Internet Crimes Against Children: $50 million.
